Fish Mobile Craft {for preschoolers}

Fish always make for a fun craft for preschool age kids. Whether you’re learning about the ocean, studying the letter f, or your child is just obsessed with “Finding Nemo” they’ll love this fish mobile craft.

This is an inexpensive craft as all you need are crayons, a paper plate, streamers, yarn, and our printable fish craft template. You can grab most of the supplies at the dollar store. I can’t wait to see what your kids create!

I’m always looking for easy craft projects to do with my daughter. We really try to limit screen time so having a project when she’s antsy or skips a nap is a must have. I’d had this idea in my head for a while and this week we finally made it happen.

We did ours in two parts as my 3 year old enjoys craft projects, but only in small doses. So we colored the fish one day and then she ran off while I cut them out. The next day we did the gluing and got everything put together.

When the project is all done you’ll have 8 fish swimming in a sea of kelp. It’s a great opportunity for talking a little about fish and one place in the ocean that fish live. Maybe even pair it with a trip to your local aquarium!

Fish Craft Supplies

• Crayons, paint, or paint sticks (this is what we used here)
• Green streamers
• Paper Plate
• yarn or string
• printable fish template (download later in this post)
• hole punch
• glue or glue stick

How to make a fish mobile

1 – The first task is to color your fish. You can find your own or download the fish template below.

This printable includes 4 fish for your kids to color for this fish mobile craft. I recommend printing them on cardstock if you can so the ends don’t curl like ours did. But regular paper will work just fine too. The PDF will print on three 8.5×11″ pieces of paper if you print the instructions page as well.

2 – Once your child is done coloring you’ll need to cut out each fish, you can also do this before they color them, but it may be more difficult for them without the extra paper.

3 – Punch 4 holes in your paper plate, one on each side so that you can hand your mobile.

If desired, have your child color or paint their paper plate blue.

4 – Tie a knot in four pieces of yarn. Put one through each hole and then tie them all together at the top and you’ll be able to hang your fish mobile once it’s all done.

5 – Cut 6 pieces of green streamer to create your kelp bed. I cut mine in two lengths, three each. Ours are around 12″ and 16″ long.

6 – Flip your fish over so the back side is up and put glue in the middle of each fish before attaching it somewhere on a piece of “kelp”.

Leave 1″-2″ inches at the top of each streamer so you can attach them to your plate.

Repeat until all your fish are attached to the “kelp”. We put one fish on each short piece and some of the longer pieces had two fish.

7 – Put a small amount of glue at the top of the streamer. Then press the piece flat onto the bottom of your paper plate. Repeat for all 6 strips spacing them out around the plate.

Regular glue may be better for this. We use a glue stick but you have to be careful or the streamer will start to rip once it gets too wet.

8 – Allow to dry and then hang somewhere and watch your fish swim around.

This craft is perfect for doing with just your child at home or making with a preschool class and turning the ceiling into a sea of swimming fish!
