My daughter recently became obsessed with the movie “A Bug’s Life”. So making our own ants was a natural tie in. While mine is a more traditional black she insisted hers needed to be blue, just like the ants in the movie.

Supplies

How to make an egg carton Ant Craft

1 – The first step is to cut apart your egg carton into sets of 3. If it’s hard to break apart you can dampen it slightly and then allow it to dry again.

2 – Use a paintbrush to paint your egg carton whatever color you choose. Allow to dry before moving to the next step.

3 – Poke 3 holes on either side of the body for the legs. I used a toothpick which was a little hard to push through but not terrible. (an adult should do the hole making)

At one end poke two holes in the top of one of the 3 pieces for the antennae.

4 – Push a piece of pipe cleaner into each hole folding a small piece of the end over.

You can use hot glue to secure the leg if desired. Or hot glue them on the underside instead of making holes for the legs. (Hot gluing should only be done by an adult).

5 – Glue two googly eyes on the front of your ant (attach them to the same piece as the antennae).

Allow the glue to dry and your ant is complete!

Learning Opportunities

Fine motor skills

Pushing the pipe cleaners into the holes and bending them can be a bit tricky. It’s perfect for working on fine motor skills. Lend them a hand and help them guide them in if they’re having trouble.
