I know sometimes this book gets a bad wrap from parents who get tired of reading it…but I loved reading this book to my kids! It was one of first opportunities to start recognizing the different letters of the alphabet.

Supplies
- 1 piece of brown construction paper
- 1 piece of colored paper (any but green or brown)
- 3 green cupcake liners
- 4 brown cupcake liners
- foam alphabet stickers
- glue
- scissors
Directions
1 – Start by taking your piece of brown construction paper. Lay it long ways and fold it in half, then fold it in half again.
Unfold it and cut down one of the lines. Now you have a brown rectangle for the trunk of your tree. (You can get 4 trunks from piece of paper).
2 – Choose a piece of paper to use for your background. You can use any color other than brown or green.
Place the paper vertically and then glue the trunk onto it.
3 – Take 3 green cupcake liners and fold them in half. Next, carefully cut out the center piece. Then, snip where the two arches are connected to create 2 palm fronds.
Repeat for the other 2 cupcake liners.
4 – Glue all six palm fronds to the tree.
5 – Now it’s time to make some coconuts.
Fold the brown cupcake liners in half and cut out the center portion. This time you want to keep the centers. Unfold them and you’ll have little circles, perfect for coconuts.
We made 4 coconuts, but you can make however many you want.
You can also cut the coconuts out of light brown paper if you prefer.
6 – It’s finally time to add the letters! Grab those foam letter stickers and add as many as you want.

Learning Opportunities
Letter Recognition
This is a great activity for practicing letter recognition. Kids can name letters as they are putting them on their tree and/or name them to someone while showing off their craft.
Fine Motor Skills
Crafts can be great for fine motor skill. Taking the backs off the letters, cutting, gluing pieces. All while having fun of course!
