My kids love dragonflies and oddly, aren’t scared of them like they are some flying insects.
This pipe cleaner craft can be a fun addition to a nature or bug themed unit or just a fun and easy craft to keep kids busy.
Supplies
- 3 pipe cleaners
- 11 pony beads
You will need these items for each dragonfly you want to make. Use whatever color you wish!
How to make a pipe cleaner dragonfly
1 – Take your first pipe cleaner and fold it in half. This piece will become the body of your dragonfly.
2 – Add 10 beads to the pipe cleaner. It’s easier if you start at the rounded, folded end. Slide them about halfway down the pipe cleaner.
Set Aside.
3 – Take the other two pipe cleaners and form them into circles making sure to wrap the ends. These will become the wings.
4 – Take one circle and place it around the body piece (the one with the beads).
I centered my circle, pushed down to flatten it, this will give you two smaller circles, one on each side. Then, you want to twist each circle over the middle to the other side. This help secure the wings.
In the end each will be kind of like a figure 8.
Repeat with the other circle.
5 – Add the last bead above the wings to complete the body.
6 – Curl the remaining pipe cleaner ends down to create the big eyes of the dragonfly which will also give it a head.
Learning Opportunities
Fine Motor Skills
Adding the beads to the pipe cleaners is great for find motor skills and hand eye coordination in your kids.
Counting
Placing the 10 beads can be a fun counting activity. Kids can practice counting to ten by counting the beads which is great for developing one-to-one correspondence.
For older kids you could do some basic addition. If there are five on already you can ask how many more they need to get to 10.
