I love homemade playdough. I know exactly what’s in it and it lasts much longer than the store bought stuff without getting hard! We’ve had a batch my daughter has been playing with for 4 months now.

Playdough is such a great tool for open ended play since it can be manipulated in so many ways. My daughter cuts it, uses cutters, rolls it, builds snowmen out of it, etc. Every time she plays she makes something different.

Is this playdough edible?

All the ingredients are safe to eat but it’s usually advised to not eat raw flour as there is a slight chance of salmonella. So you will want to discourage eating but all the ingredients are things you’d normally use in the kitchen.

Do I have to use cream of tartar?

While you can make playdough without cream of tartar you will have better results if you include it. It helps create a great texture for your playdough and also acts as an extra preservative.

I’ve heard you can replace cream of tartar with lemon juice or vinegar but have never tried it myself. (You would then need to add more flour or reduce the amount of water used or your dough will end up sticky from the extra liquid.)
