Sight words, often called “heart words,” are those high-frequency words that children need to recognize by sight.

These words don’t always follow phonetic rules, making them essential for building fluency and confidence in young readers. Words like saidhave, and where are all considered sight words or “heart words”.

Supplies

For this activity, all you need is the free printable (download below), and scissors to cut them out!

I highly recommend printing them on cardstock or laminating if you’re using them for a large class or unit center activity.

Fun Ways to Play

There are different ways to use these little sight word snowmen.

Matching Game

The most basic way is to use them as a matching game. Lay out the hats and the snowmen and have kids match the correct snowmen with the correct hat.

Have them say the sight word out loud when they choose a snowman, and again when they add his or her hat.

Memory Game

You could also use them as a memory game. You can still use the snowmen and the hats or print out two copies of either one.

Flip them upside down and then try to find two matches just like in a regular game of memory.

Get Moving

Hide the hats around the room. Put one snowman up at the front of the room then have the child or class hunt around for the matching hat.

Repeat for as many snowmen as you want.
